Department of Music

Irene Lee is a 4th year student in the College of Arts & Sciences, studying music and biology.  She has been studying violin for 15 years, most recently under the instruction of Professor Daniel Sender at the University of Virginia.  During the past four years, she has been involved in many performance opportunities offered by the McIntire Department of Music, including the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Ensembles, and is in the inaugural class of the Performance Concentration program offered to music majors.  After graduation, Irene will be working in Northern Virginia for one year before attending medical school in the fall of 2018.

Some of Irene’s favorite memories with the McIntire Department of Music include performing Symphony Under the Stars, being featured in a digeridoo performance at TedxUVA and the Australian Bush Banquet at the Kluge-Ruhe Museum of Aboriginal Art, and participating in the summer Pops Concerts at the Paramount Theater in Downtown Charlottesville.

Irene’s Distinguished Major Recital marks the culmination of 15 years of dedication to the violin.  Amidst all the joys and challenges that come with learning an instrument, she has nurtured a passion for violin performance and music in general, which she hopes to portray through her recital.   More than anything, she is thankful that God placed in her a genuine love and appreciation for music that will continue to bring peace and restoration to her soul.

The recital program will feature Sonata for Violin in D Major by Jean-Marie Leclair, Romance No. 1 in G Major by Ludwig van Beethoven, Chaconne by Tomaso Antonio Vitali, and Sonata for Violin and Piano in C minor by Edvard Grieg.  Irene will be accompanied by Dr. Shelby Sender on all four pieces.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda.  (map) Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner.  Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
