Luc Cianfarani Distinguished Major Recital

Piano and Synthesizer

Tuesday, April 03 - 2018

The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents a Distinguished Major Recital by Luc Cianfarani on Tuesday, April 3rd at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall.  Luc will be performing music for piano and synthesizer.

Luc Cianfarani is a 4th-year music major from Saratoga Springs, NY. He is a pianist and composer and will be beginning a master’s degree in music composition in the fall. While at UVA he has studied piano under John Mayhood and composition under Leah Reid. In the spring of 2016, Luc studied piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he studied under Sinae Lee.

Luc has performed extensively throughout his time at UVA. He has performed in masterclasses for Stephen Drury and David Breitman and has performed at the Kennedy Center in the summer of 2016. As a Miller Arts Scholar, he has received funding to study piano in New York City and Washington D.C. In addition to his solo performances, he has also performed chamber music and has accompanied various choirs. Luc has also performed in studio settings, having recorded theme music for “Footprints”, a Chinese language documentary airing on Phoenix Satellite Television.

As a composer, Luc has had many works performed at UVA. His work is inspired by a variety of sources, included but not limited to spectralism, Caribbean music, bebop, and visual art. Much of is work is informed by synesthesia and research on color perception and music. In addition to writing concert music, Luc is also an active film composer. He has scored numerous films that have been premiered at the Virginia Film Festival. He spent the summer of 2017 in Los Angeles working as an orchestrator, copyist, and assistant to composer Chad Cannon.

Luc’s recital will feature an ambitious program of works all composed post-1970. The program includes works by Rzewski, Stockhausen, Kapustin, and an original work for piano and live electronics.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda (map). Parking is available in the Central Grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Road, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner.
