Assistant Professor, General Faculty

The University of Virginia, McIntire Department of Music invites applications for a non-tenure track position in composition beginning Fall 2017. This is a three-year, non-renewable position at the rank of Assistant Professor, General Faculty. The anticipated start date of the position is July 25, 2017.

Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in the Composition and Computer Technologies (CCT) program. The position will teach the equivalent of three courses each semester in the applicant's area of specialization. This position will also participate in the CCT Colloquium Series, TechnoSonics and Digitalis festivals, and to engage in the artistic and scholarly life of the Music Department and the University of Virginia.

The CCT program emphasizes the integration of acoustic and computer-based composition, considered as part of a diverse multimedia and interdisciplinary 21st Century field of art, design and music. We strive to build a unique climate of creative and technical research befitting a leading institution of higher education such as UVA. Current CCT faculty teach courses in a variety of fields, including, vocal and instrumental composition, sound synthesis, mobile interactive computer ensemble, audio engineering, mobile app development, and ecoacoustics.

Beyond CCT, the Music Department also includes an innovative Critical and Comparative Studies (CCS) program and a broad Performance program. CCS develops interdisciplinary perspectives on music and musical culture. Performance at UVA promotes diverse traditions of music including western classical, jazz, marching band, new music, bluegrass, Klezmer, and African music and dance ensembles. In addition, Music collaborates with many different schools and departments, such as Engineering, English, Drama, Dance, Environmental Sciences, Art and Psychology.

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or Doctorate in music or related field at the time of application or furnish proof from the relevant registrar that all documentation required for the Ph.D. or D.M.A. has been submitted. University teaching experience is desirable.
