Bluegrass Ensemble - Auditions and Performs only in the Spring Semester

Cavalier Marching Band - AUDITIONS ONLY IN FALL SEMESTER!
If you are interested in joining the Cavalier Marching Band, please fill out the marching band interest form and be sure to visit the CMB website. Contact William Pease with any questions or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Every member of the band will schedule a short director meeting during the summer before their first year. Most members will choose to do this during their orientation, but other arrangements can be made if needed. Colorguard and percussion students will have auditions at our late summer pre-camp.
Chamber Music Seminar
Contact Ayn Balija with any questions. Students should prepare 5-7 minutes of music (of their choosing) that best demonstrates their abilities. Students who have played in chamber groups in past semesters may not need to re-audition, but should contact Prof.Balija with their intention to enroll. Specific requests for groups or coaches can be made, but can't be guaranteed. Students should wait for placement information before registering under the coach's section.
Sign-ups will be available in the lobby of Old Cabell Hall. Spring Auditions take place January 19th - 25th. No prepared piece is required. Auditions are used to determine vocal range and quality as well as sightsinging ability. Those interested in Chamber Singers must also be members of The University Singers. Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia - AUDITIONS ONLY IN FALL SEMESTER!
Audition times are limited and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up sheets will be placed in the Old Cabell Hall lobby beginning at 10:00am on Saturday, August 22nd 2015. Excerpts are provided by the Principal players of each section and are available in PDF form below.

All UVA horn players are welcome to participate in the Horn Ensemble. The group receives weekly instruction and performs at least once each semester.
Students explore a variety of music genres and work to improve both ensemble and personal performance skills.
Jazz Small Groups - AUDITIONS ONLY IN FALL SEMESTER!
Thursday, August 27th 2015, 7:30pm B18 Old Cabell Hall. Students may indicate their interest in either the big band or smaller jazz groups (or both) at the time of the audition. The informal audition will consist of reading through a chart and improvising over a simple chord progression. Musicians will be notified of the audition results by the jazz faculty and are assigned to a group based on stated interest and ability. If you can't make the audition or callbacks (especially if you are a returning member), or if you have questions please write the jazz faculty at email@example.com. Participation is by instructor permission for all Jazz groups.

Admission by instructor permission. Audition is the first day of class in Spring 2016, Wednesday, January 20, 7:30-9:30pm, in 113 Old Cabell, or by appointment. Students can audition with any manner of piece to show their ability. This music was passed on orally from generation to generation, and many of the ornaments which are so integral to the klezmer sound can only be approximated by Western staff notation – not to mention the patterns of improvised variation which are the cornerstone of the style. The following instruments are sought: violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba (and other low brass), percussion (drum set, xylophone), piano, and accordion, although others will also be considered. New Music Ensemble
No preparation required, simply show up to the first class meeting with an open mind, some knowledge of modern composers, and the ability to play an instrument or sing. Contact I-Jen Fang with any questions.

Private Lesson Auditions (Piano & Voice)
New piano and voice students who would like to take private lessons should audition to be placed with the correct instructor. Students wanting to take private lessons for any other instrument should contact the instructor (see faculty listing at music.virginia.edu/private-teachers.)
PIANO LESSON AUDITIONS:
Piano auditions on being held on Wednesday, January 20th 2016, 3:30-7pm in room 113. Auditions by appointment only, and students should contact John Mayhood at email@example.com to schedule a time. Students should plan to perform two contrasting pieces and memorization is optional but encouraged, especially for those playing at an advanced level. (Private lessons are generally not available to beginning students, who should instead consider enrolling in MUSI 2302 or 2304, as appropriate.) Please email with any questions.
VOICE LESSON AUDITIONS
Students can sign up for an audition time in the lobby of Old Cabell Hall. Please plan to sing a prepared piece (and a possible second selection of contrasting tempo/style). Auditionees should bring the printed music to the audition. An accompanist will be provided. Contact Pam Beasley (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you have questions. Auditions take place Tuesday, January 19th 2016, 1-4 pm in room 107. Students can sign up for an audition time in the lobby of Old Cabell Hall.

The group meets once a week and performs original works, popular transcriptions, arrangements and student compositions. The Trombone Ensemble will perform one concert per semester and will hold additional optional performances throughout the UVa and Charlottesville community. Contact Bill Pease (email@example.com) to schedule an audition time. Woodwind and brass players should prepare no more than 4 minutes of material that showcases both technical and lyrical ability. A sightreading segment will also be provided. Percussion players should prepare a solo or exerpt for snare drum and/or mallet percussion. A sightreading segment will be given at the audition. Students may choose to audition on both snare and mallets but are not required to do so and may choose to audition on only one instrument. The Wind Ensemble performs one concert each semester in Charlottesville, with literature ranging from pops to contemporary to traditional band masterworks. The group also tours the mid-Atlantic every spring.
Woodwind Chamber Ensembles
Auditions for Woodwind Chambers Ensembles are concurrent with auditions for the Charlottesville Symphony. Students should prepare the given exerpts for the Charlottesville Symphony auditions and state their interest in chamber ensembles during their audition time. Oratorio Society of Virginia
Interested singers in all voice parts are encouraged to audition for Charlottesville’s longest running community chorus. The Oratorio Society of Virginia will hold fall auditions Wednesday and Thursday, September 9 and 10 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Municipal Arts Center (MAC). Music Director Michael Slon, who is also Associate Professsor and Director of Choral Music at the University of Virginia, will conduct the 10-minute auditions for which no prepared piece is required.
