The McIntire Department of Music presents a cello masterclass by Dr. Wesley Baldwin, Professor of Cello at the University of Tennessee, on Saturday, November 9th at 11am in room 107 of Old Cabell Hall.  The class is free and open to the public.

Dr. Wesley Baldwin will teach three university students who will be performing music by Bach, Boccherini, and Beethoven in an open masterclass .

Cellist Wesley Baldwin holds degrees from Yale College, the New England Conservatory, and the University of Maryland. His cello teachers included Colin Carr, Evelyn Elsing David Hardy, David Soyer, and Peter Wiley. Prior to his appointment at UT, he taught cello at the University of Maryland, and at Florida International University, where he was an artist-in-residence for three years.

Dr. Baldwin performs throughout the United States and Europe as soloist and chamber musician. As a concerto soloist he has appeared throughout the United States. An advocate for great music from all eras, Dr. Baldwin is one of the only performers of several little known and new concerti for cello, including recently those by Wagenseil, Jacob T.V., Behzad Ranjbaran, and Alan Shulman. His recording of Shulman cello music, released by Albany records in 2010, enjoys widespread critical acclaim. He has also recorded for the Naxos, Zyode, Centaur, and Innova labels.

Wesley was the founder of the Plymouth String Quartet, with whom he was a top prizewinner in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and a finalist in the Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Competition. Other performing honors Baldwin has received include the Prix Mercure and Homer Ulrich Awards. Most recently, Wesley is a 2011 recipient of a Tennessee Arts Commission Individual Performing Artist Fellowship.

Dr. Baldwin has performed chamber music at the Aspen, Cazenovia, Hot Springs, Ojai, Sandpoint, Mainly Mozart, May in Miami, Skaneateles, and Subtropics Music Festivals, and internationally in Italy, France, Monte Carlo, Spain, Austria, Brazil, Argentina, the United Kingdom and Costa Rica.

Wesley is now cellist of the James Piano Quartet, for four years the resident ensemble at Sweet Briar College and the Wintergreen Festival. In the summers he performs and teaches at the Michigan City Chamber Music Festival, the ARIA academy, and at the Wintergreen Festival, where he serves on the faculty of the Wintergreen Academy and holds the Leonard Rose Memorial chair as principal cellist of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra. In the summer of 2011 he also acted as faculty member and camp director of the new James Piano Quartet Summer Chamber Music Camp in Virginia.

An enthusiastic teacher, Dr. Baldwin is privileged to work with a studio of energetic and talented music major cellists at UT. His former students play and teach throughout the United States, attend some of the most prestigious collegiate music programs in the country, and garner attention at competitions.

Recently his former cello students have continued their musical studies at Florida State University, Louisiana State University, Oberlin College, the University of Maryland, the University of Southern California, and the Hartt School.  Recently attended summer festivals by Dr. Baldwin's cello students include the National Repertory Orchestra, Bowdoin, Hot Springs, Orford, ARIA, and Wintergreen Festivals.
