Old Cabell Hall
Free

The McIntire Department of Music presents the University of Virginia Chamber Singers directed by Michael Slon on Sunday, November 9th, at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall.

The UVa Chamber Singers invite the UVa and Charlottesville communities to a free concert on Sunday, November 9th, at 8:00 pm at Old Cabell Hall on the grounds of the University of Virginia.  The UVa ensemble’s fall 2014 program is “A Madrigal Feast” – presenting an entertaining array of music including Italian, English, and modern madrigals.  The program includes madrigals by Monteverdi and Vecchi, familiar English madrigals by Morley and Weelkes, a humorous offering from P.D.Q Bach, and excerpts from Lalo Schifrin’s Madrigals for the Space Age.  The talented members of the Singers will combine in small groups for several selections, and the chorus will be joined by UVa faculty pianist and choral accompanist John Mayhood, performing madrigal transcriptions for keyboard.

Founded in 2005 and conducted by Michael Slon, the University of Virginia Chamber Singers is a select ensemble drawn from the University Singers, and performs a wide variety of music for chamber choir ranging from early music to contemporary compositions. Recent performances have included the Palestrina Missa Brevis, Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia, Bach's Cantata 150, and Mass in B minor with the University Singers, Schubert's Mass in G, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Brahms' Neue Liebeslieder Waltzes, a spoof concert of PDQ Bach, and Orff's Carmina Burana with the University Singers and Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia. In addition, the group has performed popular standards by Harold Arlen and Jerome Kern, and new music by Meredith Monk (with the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble), and Eric Whitacre.
