Come to Chuanyuan Liu's Distinguished Major Countertenor Recital Sunday, March 31 at 8:00pm in Old Cabell Hall.

Countertenor Chuanyuan Liu’s Distinguished Major Recital will feature works by Purcell, Bach, Caccini, Scarlatti, Handel, Dove, Brahms, Fauré, and Heggie. Chuanyuan will be joined by faculty pianist John Mayhood, faculty horn player Katy Ambrose, and a student chamber orchestra comprised of Andrew Jiao, Baylor Towne, Margaret Knox, and Ben Motter.

Chuanyuan began pursuing singing less than three years ago, but quickly found his artistic voice at the University of Virginia. He currently studies with Professor Brenda Patterson and has performed with the University Singers, the Chamber Singers, and the Virginia Glee Club. He is a Miller Arts Scholar and a recipient of University Award for Projects in the Arts. He recently sang in the Martin Katz masterclass hosted by the McIntire Department of Music.

Chuanyuan made his operatic debut as a chorus member in Victory Hall Opera’s American premiere of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s La Sympathie in 2017. He then attended both national and international training programs, including Virginia Baroque Performance Academy (Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival), Mikael Eliasen Voice Program (Curtis Summerfest), and Oberlin in Italy, where he sang in the chorus of Puccini’s La Rondine. Previous scene credits include Sandmann (Hänsel und Gretel) and Nerone (L’incoronazione di Poppea). Previous concert credits include soloist in Handel’s Messiah (excerpt), Bernstein’s Missa Brevis, and a frequent participant of Tea Time Recitals at the University of Virginia. He will make his operatic role debut as Nireno (Giulio Cesare) with the Chicago Summer Opera in August 2019.

This event is free and open to the public.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda (map). Parking is available in the Central Grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Road, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner.
