Burtner Elected to Society of Scholars

Matthew Burtner has been elected to the 2020 class of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, which honors former Hopkins affiliates who have achieved marked distinction in their fields. An Alaska-born composer, sound artist, and eco-acoustician, Burtner is a 2011 IDEA Award Winner, a recipient of the Howard Brown Foundation Fellowship, and First Prize Winner of the Musica Nova International Electroacoustic Music Competition. He is the Eleanor Shea Chaired Professor of Music in Composition and Computer Technologies at the University of Virginia where he co-directs the Coastal Futures Conservatory. He is also director of the Alaskan-based environmental arts nonprofit organization, EcoSono. The induction ceremony for the 2020 Scholars will take place on April 6, 2020
