Richard Will Appointed Chair of Music

Richard Will has been appointed Chair of the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia. Will joined the faculty in 2001 and has previously served the department in many administrative roles, including as Interim Chair in 2006-07. A scholar of 18th- and 19th-century classical music, he has published widely on the composers Beethoven, Haydn, and Mozart. He also has a strong interest in American folk and roots music and teaches a popular undergraduate class on the subject. Members of the community may also know him from the pre-concert lectures he delivers for the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra, or from his local performances as a bluegrass fiddler. Will remarks, "I can't imagine a more exciting time to lead this department. The university is mounting new initiatives in the arts, a new marching band building is under construction, and our faculty and students are scoring one achievement after another in performance, composition, and research. I am delighted and honored to serve." Will's five-year term as Chair begins in August 2010.
