From November 15th to 18th, the Society for Ethnomusicology held its annual conference, in sunny Albuquerque, New Mexico. Students and faculty from UVA Music participated in a number of exciting panels, roundtables, and meetings. Doctoral student Kyle Chattleton presented on his research on sound activism in Charlottesville, at a roundtable on "Recognizing and Confronting White Supremacy through Sound Scholarship.” Associate Professor Michelle Kisliuk co-organized the roundtable with Kyle, and she and Assistant Professor Noel Lobley both also participated, presenting work and ideas in response to Kyle’s research questions. Associate Professor Bonnie Gordon was invited to present at a roundtable on "Ethnomusicologists as Public Commentators," while Assistant Professor Nomi Dave organized and presented on a panel on ‘Music and Sexual Violence.’ Associate Professor Karl Hagstrom Miller was invited to present on a panel on “Talent and the Global Music Industries.” 

For the second time, UVA also co-hosted a joint conference reception with Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. The reception took place in the conference hotel on Saturday evening, and brought together current and prospective students, faculty, and friends. All agreed that it was a great success!
