Martin Katz Piano Masterclass

Old Cabell Hall

The University of Virginia’s McIntire Department of Music is pleased to welcome Martin Katz to grounds March 4-5, 2019 for a two- day residency working with student pianists and singers.  Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “…the dean of collaborative pianists”, Katz has worked with and recorded with some of the world’s most celebrated singers. His career of late has also included the conductor’s podium for many prestigious opera companies in the USA and abroad as well as preparing editions for Handel and Rossini operas. An essential part of Martin Katz’ career can be seen in his commitment to the training of young singers and pianists. The University of Michigan has been fortunate to have him on their faculty since 1984, where Katz serves as the chair for the School of Music’s program in collaborative piano. In 2009, Katz’ book, The Complete Collaborator, was published by Oxford University Press and is widely considered the most influential work of its kind on this topic.

On Monday, March 4, at 8:00 pm, at UVA in Old Cabell Hall Auditorium, the public is invited to attend a Master Class to observe Martin Katz working with music students from the McIntire Department of Music. Four pairs of student pianists and singers will perform repertoire to include art songs and arias from a variety of musical time periods and receive coaching on their collaborative work from Mr. Katz. Join us as we welcome Martin Katz to Charlottesville and to the University of Virginia and learn from this master instructor.  Admission is free.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda (map). Parking is available in the Central Grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Road, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner.  Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.

All programs are subject to change.
