Charlottesville Symphony - Masterworks 3

Brahms' Second
February 17, 2018 - 8:00pm
Old Cabell Hall
$10-$45 for adults / $10 for students / UVA Students can reserve 1 Free ticket

Benjamin Rous, Conductor
Rachel Duncan, Trumpet

Notoriously wracked by self-doubt, Brahms took fifteen years to write his first Symphony. After it met with overwhelming success, he composed his second in less than a year. The Second Symphony is the most overtly optimistic of all of Brahms’ symphonies, full of warmth and the pastoral charm of the quiet lakeside town where he crafted it. Here, it is paired with Haydn’s nimble Trumpet Concerto, performed by Principal Trumpet Rachel Duncan, and Ricercar, a work by up-and-coming American composer Nathan Shields.

This program includes Shields' Ricercar, Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major, HOB. VIIE:1, and Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73.

In-depth program notes are posted on the orchestra’s website, www.cvillesymphony.org two weeks prior to each Masterworks concert.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street, on Saturday nights and at Charlottesville High School on Sunday afternoons.  The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall.  Both venues are wheelchair accessible.
