UVA's New Music Ensemble, under the direction of I-Jen Fang, will take the stage on Thursday, April 9th at 8:00pm in Old Cabell Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
The program includes several pieces composed by members of the ensemble that explore approaches to improvisation, collaborative music-making, and alternative scoring techniques. Some of these pieces use graphic scores that require the performers to interpret non-traditional symbols and images as musical instructions. Other pieces are composed around sets game-like rules, creating an intersection between musical performance, theater, and gameplay. The program will include pieces by James Saunders as well as New Music Ensemble members Bob DuCharme, Alex Christie, Cameron Church, Steve Brock, and Theodore Teichman.
Members of the UVA New Music Ensemble include: Steve Brock, Becky Brown, Alex Christie (Assistant Director), Cameron Church, Bob DuCharme, Samuel Golter, Spencer Harrell, Celine Opoku, Theodore Teichman, Nelly Zevitz, and Tianyu Zhang.
The UVA New Music Ensemble, directed by I-Jen Fang, is a collaborative group of musicians who realize experimental and improvised music. The ensemble works together to arrange, interpret, and frequently compose works for the specific group. Each member brings their own perspective to the ensemble which shapes the ensemble’s sound and approach to composition and performance.
Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
