At the 2018 conference of the Society for American Music in Kansas City, Missouri, 4th-year doctoral candidate Aldona Dye, was awarded the Judith McCulloh Fellowship. The fellowship honors folklorist, editor, and folk arts advocate Judith McCulloh, and awards funding to support research of folk-based music cultures of the Americas. Aldona is planning a short residency at the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where she will study the papers of folklorist and clubwoman Annabel Morris Buchanan, who organized the popular White Top Folk Festival and was a close associate of John Powell, the UVA pianist, folklorist, and eugenicist. Through her research on Buchanan, Aldona hopes to better understand the intersection of women's music clubs, folk music, and the white supremacist agenda in the 1930s. The conference in Kansas City was an enjoyable time, filled with interesting papers, supportive colleagues, and delicious barbeque!
