A Night of New Music featuring the UVA New Music Ensemble

April 18, 2019 - 8:00pm
Old Cabell Hall
Free

UVA's New Music Ensemble, under the direction of I-Jen Fang, will take the stage on Thursday, April 18th at 8:00pm in Old Cabell Hall.

Made up of undergraduates, graduate students and community members NME performs contemporary interpretive works, often involving group improvisation, ranging from playful and anarchic to lush and meditative. The UVA New Music Ensemble will perform five pieces including a world premiere, Zipper Music for 2 Zipper Players & 2 MIDI controllers by Judith Shatin and Workers Union by Dutch composer Louis Andriessen. Workers Union, a high-energy and rhythmically unrelenting work, requires that the ensemble achieves complete rhythmic synchronicity but also leaves some specific musical decisions up to the individual performers. Andriessen intends this balance to be a central theme of the piece, stating in the score that “only in the case that every player plays with such an intention that [their] part is an essential one, the work will succeed; just as in the political work.” Similar themes are present in the other pieces on the program, which include graphic scores and improvisation-based compositions. This semester’s repertoire has led the New Music Ensemble to investigate new modes of collaborative music-making that simultaneously engage with ensemble unity and the development of individual musical voice.

Members of the UVA New Music Ensemble include: Becky Brown, Alexander Christie (Assistant Director), Samuel Golter, Lilly Ko, Christopher Luna, Lauren Roos, Travis Thatcher, Hannah Yee, Danielle Zevitz, and Tianyu Zhang.

This concert is free and open to the general public
