Digitalis will feature the newest of new digital music to come from the Virginia Center for Computer Music and its classes. There will be a special appearance by EMMI (Expressive Machines Musical Instruments), with Troy Rogers, Scott Barton and Steven Kemper playing their robotic instruments in their new composition Study No. 2 for PAM and MADI . Then, Yuri Spitsyn’s In Finite Time for electronic playback will demonstrate the latest in algorithmic composition, combining algorithmic models that involve cellular automata and rhythmicon. In addition, Lanier Sammon’s Each is scored for instrumental ensemble, submerged within sounds derived from a single strike upon a cracked gong. We will also hear exciting new pieces by undergraduates who have spent the semester immersed in their study of composition with digital technologies.
