On Monday January 19th The Charlottesville Jazz Society, in conjunction with UVA’s McIntire Department of Music and WTJU-FM, will present a performance and Master Class by world renowned Dutch drummer Han Bennink. This rare event will be held at Garrett Hall on the grounds of The University of Virginia, from 7 to 9pm. It is free to both UVA and high school students.

Han Bennink is a member of the long standing ICP Orchestra from The Netherlands, and has appeared on hundreds of recordings throughout his long career. He was recently awarded the prestigious Hans Koller European Jazz Prize for 2008. Bennink is one of those rare musicians whose abilities and interests span the music's entire spectrum, from Dixieland to free. He is perhaps best known for the humor and theatricality that he brings to everything he does.

The event in Garrett Hall will begin at 7pm with a performance by Bennink and his frequent collaborator, violinist Mary Oliver, also of the ICP Orchestra. They will then be joined by other jazz musicians from the area, including Chapman Stick artist Greg Howard. The master class will be held during the 2nd hour, from about 8 to 9pm. Student musicians of all types are encouraged to bring their instruments and take advantage of this rare opportunity to learn from one of the world’s greatest jazz musicians.

Tickets will be available at the door only, beginning at 6:30pm. All students may get in free, but there is a $10 charge for the general public. For directions to Garrett Hall and more information, see the Charlottesville Jazz Society’s web site at www.cvillejazz.org, WTJU’s web site at wtju.net, or call 434-249-6191.
