The McIntire Department of Music, the Department of French, and the Institute of the Humanities and Global Cultures are pleased to announce a colloquium on January 25, 2013, by Annegret Fauser, Professor of Musicology and Adjunct Professor of Women's Studies at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Foreign musicians played a vital role in the shaping of Parisian identities over the political and cultural shifts of the long nineteenth century. By analyzing some of the remaining traces in the press as well as literary and archival sources, I investigate not only the role and reception of foreign musicians in Paris but also their own responses to horizons of expectation that emphasized rather than underplayed the difference and exotic character both of foreign visitors and of members of the Parisian musical community who had come to Paris from abroad and created their careers in the French capital. I will discuss the dynamic interplay between the foreign artists looking into Parisian musical life and the local expectations fostered by both the press and visiting artists. While my case studies will focus on the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, my theoretical concerns cast the net wider in historical terms.

Annegret Fauser studied musicology, art history, and philosophy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität in Bonn, the Université de la Sorbonne-Paris IV, and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. She received her PhD at the University of Bonn in 1992. Before joining the faculty at UNC, she taught musicology at the Université François Rabelais in Tours, the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, and City University, London.

Annegret Fauser's research focuses on music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and in particular that of France and America. She is author of _Der Orchestergesang in Frankreich zwischen 1870 und 1920_ (1994), _Musical Encounters at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair_ (2005), and _Sounds of War: Music in the United States during World War II_ (2013). She is the editor of several books, most recently (with Mark Everist) _Stage Music and Cultural Transfer: Paris, 1830-1914_ (2009), which was awarded the Ruth A. Solie Award of the American Musicological Society. From 2011-13, she is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Musicological Society.

The recipient of the 2011 Edward J. Dent Medal of the Royal Musical Association, Annegret Fauser was also a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Study) in 2009-10 and a Pardue Fellow at the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at UNC (2004). She has been awarded major fellowships and grants by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the European Research Council, the British Academy, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Fondation Nadia et Lili Boulanger, and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst. She is International Honorary Principal Fellow at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Australia, and, in 2012, she also held an endowed guest professorship in women and gender studies, the Käthe-Leichter Gastprofessur für Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung, at the Universität Wien.
