CHARLOTTESVILLE—The University of Virginia’s Chamber Music Series announces its second concert of the 2009-2010 Season “Note-able Revolutions: Inspiration.” Held on Sunday afternoon, February 21, 2010 at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall on the university grounds, the inspiring concert features mixed ensembles of the extraordinary talents of the UVA performance faculty. Works by Brahms, Reinecke, Saint-Saëns and Frankenpohl will be presented.

Powerful and potent in form, performance and experience, music inspires and is inspired. After experiencing a concert by then renowned clarinetist Richard Mühfeld, Brahms was inspired to compose for the instrument and artist. The first mixed ensemble formed by members of the Rivanna String Quartet, David Colwell, violin, David Sariti, violin, Ayn Balija, viola and Adam Carter, cello with clarinetist Tasha Warren will present Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet in B Minor, Op. 115. An influential teacher of composers during the Romantic Era, Carl Reinecke composed the Trio in A minor, Op 188 for Oboe, Horn and Piano to be performed by Aaron Hill, oboe, Ian Zook, horn and guest pianist Lori Piitz. For the third ensemble, Elizabeth Roberts, bassoon and guest pianist David Norfrey collaborate on the inspiring Sonata for Bassoon and Piano in G, Op. 168 by Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns. An example of his influence on all types of students through his texts, arrangements and compositions, Arthur Ronald Frackenpohl’s Trumpet and Trombone Duets will be performed by Paul Neebe, trumpet and Nathan Dishman, trombone.

The final two concerts of the series are set for Sunday March 21 and Sunday April 18, 2010, Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall. The third concert will be a joint recital by percussionist I-Jen Fang and violist Ayn Balija. In addition to compositions by Rebecca Clarke, Colgrass, and Munn, Penelope’s Song by Judith Shatin, composer and William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Music and Director of the Virginia Center for Computer Music of the McIntire Department of Music, will explore the revolutionary spirit. Concluding the series, the Rivanna Quartet will consider the final element of revolution, passion, when it performs on Sunday, April 18. A string quartet in residence at UVA, the Rivanna Quartet presents a concert of Beethoven: Quartet in F Minor, Op. 95 “Serioso;” Haydn: Quartet in F Major, Op. 50 No. 5; Schubert: Sonatensatz and Janáček: String Quartet No. 1, “Kreutzer Sonata”.

A reception will immediately follow each concert providing an opportunity for audience members to meet and discuss the concert with the performers.
