The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents the third of six concerts in the UVA Chamber Music Series on Sunday, January 29th, at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall. The UVA Chamber Music Series brings an array of musicians to provide professional performances to the University and the central Virginia community. Directed by Kelly Sulick, the programs offer a wide range of works that are sure to entertain, educate and enthrall.

The Rivanna String Quartet rings in the new year with an evening of exemplar string quartets on Sunday, January 29 at 3:30 pm in Old Cabell Hall.

The group lends its artistic vision to William Grant Still's poetic Lyric String Quartette. The quartet, which was written in 1960 by the esteemed African American composer, is comprised of charming vignettes.

The quartet will be joined by guests Pamela Beasley, soprano, and John Mayhood, piano, for Gabriel Fauré's ethereal La bonne chanson, op. 61. These beautiful songs feature the poetry of Paul Verlaine, a nineteenth-century French Symbolist poet, whose words were also set by Claude Debussy, among other composers.

The Rivanna String quartet will conclude their program with Maurice Ravel's invigorating String Quartet in F Major. This four-movement work, which quickly became a staple of the string quartet genre, was written in 1903 and its premiere was dedicated to Gabriel Fauré, Ravel's teacher.

This resident ensemble is comprised of McIntire Department of Music string faculty members Daniel Sender and David Sariti, violins; Ayn Balija, viola, and Adam Carter, cello.

The University of Virginia Chamber Music Series is supported by the George F. and Marion E. Jones Endowed Lectureship Fund.
