The McIntire Department of Music is pleased to present the 2016-2017 University of Virginia Chamber Music Series. This annual series, which presents innovative performances by the University of Virginia's world-class faculty and celebrated guest artists, is comprised of six professional performances for the University and the central Virginia community. These intimate afternoon concerts are programmed to offer both new and traditional works that will delight audiences of all musical tastes.

The series kicks off on Sunday, October 9 at 3:30 pm with violinist David Sariti presenting a scintillating program of music from all genres. Joined by John Mayhood on piano, Sariti will perform Grazyna Bacewicz's Three Dances for violin and piano. Bacewicz, a native of Poland, began her career as a talented violinist, and that virtuosity shines through in her delightful Three Dances.

Sariti and Mayhood will present Benjamin Britten's sonorous Suite for Violin and Piano, Op. 6, which the composer finished in 1936. Though he was just 23 years old, Britten's maturity shines through in the five vignettes that comprise the suite. The duo will also tackle Ludwig van Beethoven's seminal Violin Sonata No. 9, "Kreutzer"--a work so sweeping that it inspired a novel of the same name by Leo Tolstoy!

To conclude the program, Sariti will be joined by Greg Howard on Chapman stick. The pair, both members of the Greg Howard Quartet, will perform improvisations based on several Peter Gabriel songs.
