The Virginia Brass is comprised of faculty at the University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music and principals of the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra. It features Christopher Buchanan on trumpet, Nathaniel Lee on trombone and Katy Ambrose on horn.
Christopher Buchanan has recently been appointed to the faculty of the University of Virginia and as Principal Trumpet of the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra. Equally at home playing music of the fifteenth century as he is on the orchestral stage, his performance has been praised as possessing “technical wizardry and compelling melodic storytelling” as well as “breathtaking virtuosity (ITG Journal, May 2012).” He has appeared with ensembles across the United States, including the U. S. Naval Academy Band, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera and the Baltimore Baroque Band. Additionally, he is currently a member of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C.
Nathaniel Lee is the Lecturer of Trombone at the University of Virginia and serves as Principal Trombone of the Charlottesville Symphony. Before his appointment at the University of Virginia, Nathaniel was pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trombone Performance and Brass Pedagogy at the University of Iowa, where he served as the trombone studio Teaching Assistant. During his studies he was awarded the 2013 Downbeat Magazine Award for Outstanding Graduate Soloist. Recently Nathaniel was an invited guest artist at JMU’s trombone festival “Tromblow’in 2014”.
