Free

The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents a colloquium by CCT Visiting Scholar Zhen Wang on Friday, February 10th at 3:30pm in 107 Old Cabell Hall.  This event is free and open to the public.

Chinese elements, such as Chinese philosophy, Chinese musical instruments, Chinese characters, Chinese architecture, etc., have existed for thousands of years and form a unique aesthetic. I have been influenced to a large degree by these elements, especially Chinese philosophy. In this talk I will discuss ways in which I strive to incorporate Chinese elements into my process of composing electronic music works.

Zhen Wang is a composer working mainly in electronic music and songwriting. She has a strong interest in the combination of Chinese culture and electronic music. She has Master’s degrees from both Edinburgh University and Leeds University, UK. She is an associate professor in JiNan University of China. Her electronic works have won second and third prizes in the Beijing International Electronic Music Competition, and she received honor awards in the ShangHai eARTS Digital Audio Competition. One of her songs won the China Annual Ten Outstanding Animation Song Award in 2013.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda (map). Parking is available in the Central Grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner.  Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
