Raise your voice in one of the University of Virginia's most cherished holiday traditions at the 59th Annual Messiah Sing-In on Wednesday, December 9, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall. (Please note: The Messiah Sing-in will be on a Wednesday this year.)
Conducted by Michael Slon, Director of Choral Music at the University of Virginia, this beloved community event invites singers, instrumentalists, and listeners alike to experience the joy and grandeur of George Frideric Handel's Messiah. Whether you are a seasoned performer or opening the score for the first time, all are welcome to take part in this festive celebration of one of the world's most enduring choral masterpieces.
The audience becomes the chorus as singers gather by voice part—soprano, alto, tenor, and bass—to perform alongside an orchestra featuring University musicians and professional players from the Charlottesville community. Those who prefer to listen are invited to enjoy the performance from the Loge and Balcony as Old Cabell Hall resonates with Handel's magnificent music.
Founded in 1968 by Professor Emeritus Donald Loach, the UVA Messiah Sing-In is one of the nation's longest-running university Messiah sing-ins. For nearly six decades, it has brought together generations of students, alumni, faculty, professional musicians, and community members in a shared musical experience. Even during the pandemic, the tradition continued in a virtual format—a testament to the event's enduring place in the cultural life of both the University and the Charlottesville community. Today, Michael Slon proudly continues that tradition, welcoming new generations of musicians to this annual celebration.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own vocal scores if they have them. Scores will also be available at the event. Instrumentalists wishing to perform with the orchestra are asked to register in advance. Registration information will be posted closer to the event date.

Individual tickets are $15 General Admission, $5 for students. Tickets are available through the UVA Arts Box Office, by phone at 434-924-3376, online, or at the door beginning one hour before the performance.
Old Cabell Hall is located at the south end of the University of Virginia's Historic Lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. Parking is available in the Central Grounds Parking Garage on Emmet Street, the C1 parking lot off McCormick Road, and the parking lots near the UVA Corner.
