Katherine Tang has studied music since the age of four and will present a diverse program featuring works for both flute and piano. A double major in Psychology and Commerce with a concentration in Accounting and Finance, Katherine has been deeply involved in the UVA Music Department since her first year. She has performed with the Charlottesville Symphony, UVA Flute Ensemble, UVA Wind Ensemble, and Virginia Women’s Chorus, appearing frequently as both a soloist and collaborative pianist. Her performances include events such as the annual Teatime Recital, piano studio recitals, and Flute Forum. Additionally, she has worked and volunteered extensively for the department, serving in roles such as Desk Supervisor and House Manager, and assisting with marketing and promotional efforts.
For the recital, the piano repertoire will include Mozart’s Piano Sonata in D Major, Chopin’s Polonaise in A-flat Major, and selected movements from Samuel Barber’s Excursions. On flute, Katherine will perform a special rendition of Verdi’s Fantasie on La Traviata, Jindřich Feld’s Sonata for Flute and Piano, and the Chinese work “Sunlight on Mountain Tian” by Huwei Huang. The recital will conclude with an exciting and unique work by Gary Schocker, written for a single performer playing both flute and piano simultaneously.
At UVA, Katherine studies flute with Dr. Kelly Sulick and piano with Dr. Francesca Hurst and Professor John Mayhood. She is also deeply grateful to her high school piano teacher, Mrs. Marguerita Smith, for nurturing her lifelong passion for music. After graduating from UVA, Katherine plans to pursue a specialized master’s degree in accounting at the University of Notre Dame and earn her CPA license.
Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. For parking options, please visit our Directions and Parking page.
