“Laughter through Tears: Reconstructing the Lost Jewish Art of Badkhones”

Part of the Veretski Pass residency

Wednesday, November 20 - 2019

Now in NAU HALL Room 342 (change due to technical issues)

The UVA Jewish Studies and The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies host a colloquium on Wednesday, November 20 at noon in in room Nau Hall 342 (this is a change of rooms due to technical issues) .. The colloqium entitled “Laughter through Tears: Reconstructing the Lost Jewish Art of Badkhones” will feature Joshua Horowitz, musician and independent scholar (Berkeley, CA); James Loeffler, of the UVA Corcoran Department of History, and Joel Rubin, from the UVA McIntire Department of Music.

For centuries, Jewish weddings in Eastern Europe featured the unique art of the badkhn, the professional Jewish wedding jester. Poorly documented and little studied, this tradition, part liturgical, part comedic, remains a crucial key to understanding Ashkenazi Jewish culture. This colloquium will feature historical examples followed by discussion from ethnomusicological and historical perspectives.

Co-sponsored by: the Jewish Music Forum; the UVA Jewish Studies Program, the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies; the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures; the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures; and the Vice Provost for the Arts.

This is part of the Veretski Pass residency.  The Veretski Pass with the UVA Klezmer Ensemble will perform "The Magid Chronicles" on Thursday, November 21st at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall. (http://music.virginia.edu/klezmer-fall19)
