Renowned Ghanaian gyil performer and instrument maker Tijan Dorwana will be performing his astounding traditional xylophone music at WTJU the stage (2244 Ivy Road) on Wednesday, November 20, at 8pm, alongside assistant professor of music at the University of Central Missouri, Alex Smith. Master Tijan’s performance will provide a window into the culture and history of Northern Ghana; multimedia documentary film components integrated with the live music will specifically address the challenges facing the ongoing practice and existence of the gyil in today’s global environment and economy. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this great master in a rare visit to Virginia.
This free event is co-sponsored by McIntire Department of Music, WTJU, The Front Porch, and the Mellon Performance and Embodied Creative Practices Lab (UVA Institute of the Humanities and Global Cultures).
This event is part of a month long tour including events at the University of Missouri, University of Central Missouri, the Society for Ethnomusicology Annual Meeting at Indiana University, Michigan State University, SUNY Fredonia, West Virginia University, UVA and University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
WTJU is located at 2244 Ivy Road in Charlottesville, VA, next to Vivace restaurant. Studios are exactly one mile west of UVA’s Rotunda. By car: Parking is available both in front of and behind the building. The parking spaces in the back are handicap accessible.By bus: WTJU is served by the Purple Line of the University Transit system, at the same stop as the U-Heights housing complex. By foot / bike: Albemarle County is building new sidewalks and bike lanes on Ivy Road to WTJU and beyond.
