University of Virginia Virtual Brass Camp!

Join the brass faculty of the Department of Music at the University of Virginia for a virtual Brass Camp. Taking place via ZOOM, on Monday, July 27 through Wednesday, July 29, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon, EST, the camp is FREE, welcome to anyone, (UVA students, Community, High Schoolers, Retirees...) and will feature breakouts for beginners and for players with special interests.

Faculty members Katy Ambrose, horn; John D’earth, jazz trumpet, Nate Lee, trombone; Jess Lightner, tuba; and Arthur Zanin, classical trumpet, will lead the group in daily warm-up sessions and in-depth discussions of their instruments and numerous aspects of making music on brass instruments, including:

How to practice and enjoy practicing

How to warm up

How to plan for great results

How to have the fun that makes us want to play music in the first place

...all of this and more will be addressed by five virtuosos who want their students to have a blast while they are learning how to blow!

University of Virginia Virtual Brass Camp Faculty:

Dr. Katy Ambrose enjoys a dual-faceted career as a performer and an educator. She serves on the faculty at the University of Virginia, and as Principal Horn of the Charlottesville Symphony. Her orchestral experience includes positions in the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Northeast PA Philharmonic, Albany Symphony and Lexington Philharmonic, as well as substitute appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Hawai’i Symphony, Vermont Symphony, Richmond Symphony, and the Virginia Symphony. She is a member of the Conica quartet, and was co-founder and hornist of the internationally renowned Seraph Brass until 2017. Dr. Ambrose also performs regularly on both Baroque and Classical horns, and her diverse experience extends to popular music, recently playing for Adele’s 2016 World Tour. Katy has a special interest in using music as a way to foster growth and understanding within communities: she has taught for, and developed after-school and in-school programs for several organizations in the Philadelphia area.

Nathaniel Lee is the Lecturer of Trombone at the University of Virginia and Principal Trombone of the Charlottesville Symphony. He maintains an active regional, national, and international freelance career having played with the Richmond Symphony, Staunton Music Festival, Castleton Music Festival, Charlottesville Opera, the Oratorio Society of Virginia and the Virginia Sinfonietta. As a founding member of the American Trombone Quartet, Nathaniel has performed at multiple universities and international festivals; most recently at the 2018 International Trombone Festival and the Lille Trombone Festival in France in 2019. Nathaniel is a regular adjudicator at the International Trombone Association Trombone Quartet Competition. He appeared as a soloist at the Virginia Music Educators Association conference in 2017, and has performed recitals at colleges and universities across the country. Nathaniel is an Edwards artist and performs on Edwards trombones.

Jess Lightner is Principal Tuba of the Charlottesville Symphony and a member of the United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass. He plays frequent orchestral engagements with Washington Concert Opera, The Washington Chorus and the National Symphony Orchestra. Lightner has presented master classes and taught students at the University of Louisiana Monroe, Eastern Illinois, Texas A&M Kingsville and throughout the DC area with the Fairfax Symphony’s SCORE program. His military career includes 14 broadcast recordings for NBC’s Today Show, several national tours and numerous audio recordings. He has also recorded with The Cathedral Choral Society on Dominick Argento’s Evensong: of Love and Angels. A founding member of the British-style brass band, Brass of the Potomac, he is heard on its album American Rhapsody. He has also done studio work for Disney and various educational recordings.

Dr. Arthur Zanin began serving on the faculty at the University of Virginia and as Principal Trumpet of the Charlottesville Symphony in Fall 2019. He has an international performance career, having played in orchestral and chamber music settings in South America, the United States and Europe. He holds the Georgia Haigh Chair with the Southwest Florida Symphony and has performed as a guest with a number of orchestras, including the Honolulu Symphony, Sarasota Orchestra, Charlottesville Opera and the Naples Philharmonic. Dr. Zanin regularly presents master classes in colleges and high schools around the country and has conducted youth orchestras in Brazil and Spain. He currently appears as a board member and Trumpet Instructor at the Music Foundation of Greater Naples, in Naples, Florida, and recently accepted a one-year position at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Jazz trumpeter and composer John D'earth was born in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1950. He studied, as a teenager, with saxophonist Boots Mussulli, (Stan Kenton, Charlie Ventura, Teddy Wilson) with John Coffey, (principal trombonist in the Boston Symphony) and arranging with Thad Jones. He attended Harvard University and, later, moved to New York City where he studied with Carmine Caruso, Vince Penzarella and Richie Beirach.

D'earth has performed and recorded internationally and appeared on over one hundred recordings spanning the analog and digital eras on vinyl, CDs, film, and video. His work with a plethora of musical legends (Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Gunter Hampel’s Galaxie Dream Band, Miles Davis/Quincy Jones at Montreaux, Tito Puente, Bruce Hornsby, Emily Remler, Bennie Wallace, Eddie Gomez, The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, Bob Moses, Pat Metheny, Joe Henderson, Clark Terry, John Scofield and John Abercrombie, among many others) has called upon his ability to feel at home, creatively, in many genres.
