UVA Klezmer Ensemble Fall 2020 Performance of Gas Nign and Yiddish Khosidl

Under the direction of Director of Music Performance and acclaimed clarinetist and ethnomusicologist Joel Rubin, the UVA Klezmer Ensemble has focused for the past fifteen years on the music of the klezmorim, the Jewish professional instrumentalists of Eastern Europe, as well as related Jewish and other East European traditions from the 18th century to the present. The ensemble, which is a for-credit class, has been made up of both undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, alumni, and other members of the greater Central Virginia community.

Instead of our usual end of semester concert, because of Covid-19 this semester the UVA Klezmer Ensemble under the direction of Joel Rubin worked on a recording project.

This first medley is based on “Hora in A Minor” (colloquially known as Gas Nign/Street Processional) as played by Bukovina-born fiddler Leon Schwartz, recorded ca. 1985–88, and “Yiddisch Chusedl” from 1916 by Romanian-born fiddler Max Leibowitz. Listen.

The members of the ensemble who perfomed on this medley are:
Lauren Santucci, violin
Michael, Santucci, viola
Joel Rubin, clarinet
Tom Krop, accordion and piano
Brian Roy, bass
Elie Baskhow, recording and production

Recorded November 15, 2020
Mastered by Orion Faruque (redmusicproductions.com) and Elie Bashkow at Virginia Arts Recording, Charlottesville, VA.
released December 10, 2020
All arrangements ©2020 Joel Rubin (GEMA), published by Klineter Music (ASCAP).
