UVA Chamber Music Series - Concert 2

Adam Carter, Cello; Jeannette Jang, Violin; Jeremy Thompson, Piano

Sunday, November 21 - 2021

The second concert in the UVA Chamber Music Series features cellist Adam Carter, who will be joined by violinist Jeannette Jang and pianist Jeremy Thompson.

Adam Carter will start with Suite for Violoncello Solo No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009 by J. S. Bach (1685-1750). The piece is comprised of six movements; Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Bourrée I/II, Gigue.

The second piece is Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) featuring Jeremy Thompson on piano. The sonata is comprised of three movements; 1. Prologue (Lent, sostenuto e molto risoluto), 2. Sérénade (Modérément animé), 3. Finale (Animé, léger et nerveux). This piece was composed 3 years before Debussy died. He was pleased with the “proportions and almost classical form in the best sense of the word” of his piece.

The last piece is Piano Trio No.2 in E minor, Op.67 by Dmitri Shostakovich. It has four movements; 1. Andante, 2. Allegro con brio, 3. Largo, 4. Allegretto. This piece is dedicated to the memory of Ivan Sollertinsky, who was a close friend of Shostakovich. The last movement of the piece has some humorous moments with some hidden klezmer melody fragments.
