Michael Slon

The UVA Department of Music presents the 54th annual Messiah Sing-In on Tuesday, December 7th at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall and will be simultaneously livestreamed.  The Sing-In is conducted by Michael Slon, UVA’s Director of Choral Music, and benefits the University's choral ensembles.

This year due to the pandemic, the event will be held as a limited in-person event with a simultaneous livestream.  Join the singers, Professor Slon, and pianist Deke Polifka (who will serve as this year’s orchestra) to enjoy Handel’s glorious music!

Through the years – and even a virtual version during the pandemic – the UVA Messiah Sing-In has remained a simple and joyous event, relying on the University and Charlottesville community to come together to sing and perform one of the greatest oratorios ever written.  The event remains one of the first in the nation, started in 1968 by Professor emeritus Donald Loach, who led the event for 50 years before passing the baton to Michael Slon.  Singing participants for the event sit in sections arranged according to vocal part (soprano, alto, tenor, bass), and copies of the vocal score will be available for those who do not have their own.

Masks are required in Old Cabell Hall, and while not required, a vaccination is recommended to attend this event.

Deke PolifkaORCHESTRA:
*NB: This year, we will not have an on-stage orchestra.  We hope to return to this next season, and invite those who might normally play to buy tickets to either sing or listen in the audience.
