The Department of Music is pleased to present the sixth annual University of Virginia Flute Forum on Saturday, April 2, 2022. The UVA Flute Forum is a day-long flute festival which features masterclasses, interactive workshops, and recitals. All events are free and open to the public.

This year's Forum will feature Jennifer Grim, alongside guest artists Sarah Busman, Maria Castillo, Jeremy McEntire, Courtney Morton, Rachel Ordaz, and Derek Stults.

Masks are required for attendance, and flute playing masks are required for participatory events. If pandemic conditions will not allow for safe gathering, the UVA Flute Forum will be presented on Zoom. Stay tuned to music.virginia.edu/flute-forum for more details!

The UVA Flute Forum Competition

The UVA Flute Forum Collegiate Competition is a FREE competition open to any undergraduate student currently enrolled at a college or university who is taking applied flute lessons (entrants do not need to be majoring in music).

Up to three winners will be selected to perform in a masterclass for Jennifer Grim at the sixth annual University of Virginia Flute Forum on Saturday, April 2, 2022 in Charlottesville, Virginia (or online, if deemed necessary due to the pandemic).

Those interested in entering should submit a recording of the piece they would like to perform in the masterclass. Pieces written for flute and piano should be recorded with piano accompaniment (SmartMusic or other pre-recorded accompaniment is acceptable). Winners are responsible for bringing their own pianists to the masterclass.

To enter, please submit an unedited audio recording as a file attachment (or a link to an online posting of the audio recording), to UVAFluteForum@gmail.com. Include your name, email address, telephone number, and name of your current flute instructor. Entries are due by 11:59 pm on February 15, 2022. Winners will be announced by March 1, 2022.

Biographies

Jennifer Grim

Hailed as "a deft, smooth flute soloist" by the New York Times, Jennifer Grim's remarkable depth and breadth as a performer of solo and chamber repertoire has gained broad national acclaim. She has performed with such renowned ensembles as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble and is the flutist of the award-winning Zéphyros Winds and the New York Chamber Soloists. She also serves as Principal Flute of the Mozart Orchestra of New York and the Santo Domingo Festival Orchestra and has given solo and chamber performances throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. 

Ms. Grim has performed as a soloist with the Frost Wind Ensemble, Lviv Philharmonic, Boca Raton Symphonia, Frost Wind Ensemble, UNLV Symphony Orchestra, Henderson Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Summer Music Festival, among others. As a guest artist, she has performed with the Boston Chamber Music Society, Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival, and the American String Quartet with harpist Nancy Allen. With Zéphyros Winds, Ms. Grim has been residence at universities across the country, including the Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music, Stanford University, Yale School of Music, and many others. 

An avid baroque flutist, Ms. Grim studied with renowned artists in New York, Boston, and Amsterdam and is a member of Cosmopolitan Baroque. In demand as a clinician, she has given masterclasses across the country, specializing in baroque performance practice as well as standard and contemporary solo and chamber repertoire. 

In 2012, Ms. Grim founded the UNLV Chamber Music Society, an organization that presents concerts performed by UNLV faculty as well as esteemed chamber ensembles such as the Ying Quartet, Boston Brass, Horszowski Trio, American String Quartet, and many others. She is also a passionate advocate of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the field of classical music. She has also worked with the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA) National Festival, which invites students from El Sistema inspired programs across the United States to perform in a national youth orchestra performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California. 

Ms. Grim is currently Associate Professor at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. She previously served on the faculty of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for twelve years and in 2017 was honored with the Teacher of the Year Award from the UNLV College of Fine Arts. A native of Berkeley, California, Ms. Grim holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University and Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Yale University. Recently appointed Artistic Coordinator of the Frost School at Festival Napa Valley, Ms. Grim also serves on the Board of Directors of Chamber Music America and was the 2021 Program Chair for the National Flute Association Annual Convention.
 

	Sarah Busman is the flute professor at UNCP and the principal flutist of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. In November, she will assume a new position as the Arts Education Manager for the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. She is the founder of Darkwater Festival, which celebrates womxn in music through scholarship, performance, and new music. Sarah holds a BM from Middle Tennessee State University and an MM from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She lives in Fayetteville, NC with her husband, Joshua Busman, her two little boys, Arthur and Simon, and her sweet tripod hound dog Foster.
	Dr. Maria Castillo is Assistant Professor of Flute at Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville and co-founder of the Latin American Music Initiative (LAMI), advocating for Latin American repertoire. Dr. Castillo has developed an active career in Latin America and the US. DMA from the University of Michigan.
	Jeremy McEntire is a professional flutist and teacher in the Richmond area.  In addition to his private studio, he serves on the faculties of the University of Richmond and Randolph Macon College.  He he worked as a sales representative with Nagahara Flutes for over 20 years.
	Courtney Morton began her musical training at age 10 and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in San Jose, CA. She attended San Francisco State University, and transferred to the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music (CCM) where she earned a bachelor’s degree in flute performance in 2004. In 2006, she earned a master’s degree in flute performance and literature from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She has studied with Linda Lukas and Walfrid Kujala. Courtney Morton has been a member of “The President’s Own,” US Marine Band since 2013. Previously, she served with the U.S. Naval Academy Band in Annapolis, Md., from 2010-13. She has performed with the Baltimore Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, New World Symphony, Quad City Symphony, Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Courtney Morton was a prize winner in the 2012 National Flute Association Piccolo Artist Competition and the 2013 Walfrid Kujala International Competition. She was previously an adjunct flute professor at North Park University in Chicago.
	Rachel Ordaz has held the position of Third Flute/Piccolo with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra since 2012. In 2011, she earned her Bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University under the instruction of Jeanne Baxtresser and Alberto Almarza. Ordaz completed her Master’s degree in Piccolo Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University in 2013, where she studied with Piccoloist Laurie Sokoloff. In 2016, Ordaz took 2nd place in the National Flute Association’s Piccolo Artist Competition, and was recognized for having the best performance of the newly commissioned work with the Carl Hall Prize. An avid soloist, she was featured by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Vivaldi’s Piccolo Concerto in C Major, RV 443. Ordaz has performed with numerous orchestras including the Richmond Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, and can be heard on the Oregon Symphony’s CD release, Aspects of America: Pulitzer Edition (2020).  Committed to Hampton Roads music education, she maintains a private studio and is adjunct faculty at Virginia Wesleyan University. As a community-focused musician, she currently employs her talents as the coordinator of Piccolo Competitions for the National Flute Association, while also serving on the Advisory Board of the Hampton Roads Flute Faire.
	Derek Stults has been a percussionist with the US Army Field Band since 2015. In addition to his duties with the Concert Band, he also serves as a drummer and percussionist with the Chamber Brass ensemble. Since 2011, he has freelanced in the Washington DC area and has been a regular substitute with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Previously, Mr. Stults was principal percussionist with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Southwest Michigan Symphony, the Evansville Philharmonic, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.     Mr. Stults began his training at age 6 and graduated from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School (NJ) in 2000. He attended the Hartt School at the University of Hartford where he earned a bachelor's degree in percussion performance and music education in 2005. In 2007 he earned a master's degree in percussion performance from DePaul University in Chicago, IL. In 2009 he earned a professional studies diploma in orchestral studies-percussion from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. He studied with Michael Osrowitz of the NYC Opera, Ben Toth of the Hartt School, Ted Atkatz and Vadim Karpinos of the Chicago Symphony, and Eric Millstein and Ed Harrison of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has also studied arabic hand drumming with Glen Velez. Mr. Stults attended the Aspen Music Festival, where he was a student of Doug Howard, Tom Stubbs, and Jonathan Haas. He also participated in the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, the National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado, and was a 2009 fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center.
