About the Program

The season reaches its triumphant conclusion with Brahms’ Symphony No. 1. He spent years shaping the piece under the shadow of Beethoven, and its closing moments arrive with a hard-earned sense of resolution in C major. Soprano Clara Rottsolk joins the orchestra for Saariaho’s Quatre Instants, four songs based on harrowing poems of love, loss, and memory by French-Lebanese poet Amin Maalouf. The program opens with an arrangement for orchestra by Benjamin Rous himself of the Fantasie in C by Robert Schumann, a piece set on a cosmic plane.  Evoking transcendence, memory, and the numinous, this program serves as a fitting finale to a landmark season.
