About the Program
Spring arrives in full bloom with one of the most lush and ravishing programs of the season. Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2, the largest scale work he ever composed, captures the classical union of physical and spiritual love with vivid immediacy, opening with one of music’s most celebrated sunrises and closing in a whirling, jubilant dance. The UVA University Singers join the orchestra for a cycle of choral works depicting sunset, night, and sunrise, including works by Schumann, Delius, and Ola Gjeilo, culminating in the sunrise of Daphnis. Mozart’s sparkling Magic Flute overture opens, followed by the winner of the UVA Concerto Competition, adding an exciting element of discovery. This is a concert that celebrates nature, beauty, and the thrilling future of classical music.
