The University of Virginia Department of Music proudly presents the Distinguished Major Recital of Elizabeth Mayhood, flute on Saturday, April 3, at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall.
Presented as the capstone of the student's undergraduate studies, this recital represents the culmination of years of artistic growth, dedicated practice, and scholarly achievement. Featuring a program selected in consultation with UVA music faculty, the performance showcases both technical mastery and thoughtful musical interpretation while celebrating the accomplishments of one of the Department's outstanding graduating musicians.
The Distinguished Major Program provides exceptional music majors with the opportunity to pursue an ambitious, independent project during their final year at the University. Students accepted into the program work closely with faculty mentors over two semesters to develop a substantial creative or scholarly project demonstrating advanced achievement within their chosen field.
Students presenting Distinguished Major recitals are selected through a competitive audition process and undertake intensive study that extends well beyond traditional performance preparation. In addition to refining an artistically compelling recital program, they complete independent academic work—including research and program notes—that places their performances within a broader musical and historical context. Their completed projects are evaluated by a faculty committee and may be recognized with departmental distinction, an honor awarded only to work of exceptional quality.
This recital celebrates not only an accomplished performance but also the intellectual curiosity, discipline, and artistic vision that define the Distinguished Major experience at the University of Virginia.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.
