The University of Virginia Department of Music presents the Piedmont Duo in a Faculty Artist Series performance on Saturday, March 27, at 3:30 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall. This concert is sponsored by the UVA Arts Council, enriching the arts on grounds.
Founded in 2021 by Ayn Balija, Associate Professor of Viola, and I-Jen Fang, Professor of Percussion, the Piedmont Duo brings together two distinctive voices in chamber music to explore the rich and expanding repertoire for viola and percussion. Through innovative programming, the duo champions contemporary composers, commissions new works, and introduces audiences to music that highlights the expressive possibilities of this unique instrumental pairing.
The duo has become a regular presence on Charlottesville's concert stage with recurring performances in Old Cabell Hall and has toured internationally, sharing programs that blend established repertoire with newly commissioned works. Their performances have included works by acclaimed contemporary composers, including UVA Professor Emerita Judith Shatin, whose Mariola exemplifies the duo's commitment to bringing new music to life.
