Val Jeanty playing small drum

The UVA Department of Music is pleased to present the Graduate Composers Concert featuring special guest Val Jeanty (a.k.a. Val-Inc) on Friday, February 6, 2026 at 8:00 PM in Old Cabell Hall on the University of Virginia Grounds. This event is free and open to the public.

The concert will showcase a collaboration between Val Jeanty and graduate composers in the Department of Music’s Composition and Computer Technologies (CCT) program. Participating composers include 1st through 4th year CCT grads, and Val Jeanty will premiere new works composed specifically for her by UVA’s graduate composers.

Val Jeanty, also known as Val-Inc, is a Haitian electronic music composer, turntablist, and professor at Berklee College of Music. Her work incorporates African and Haitian musical traditions, blending acoustic sound with electronic media. Jeanty’s music is often associated with the electronic subgenre Afro-Electronica, also known as “Vodou-Electro.”

UVA’s Composition and Computer Technologies (CCT) program is a leading interdisciplinary field that integrates traditional composition with electroacoustics, software, multimedia, and interactive art. The program is supported by the Virginia Center for Computer Music (VCCM) and specialized studios, providing students with opportunities to develop new music technologies and innovative sound art.

Each year, UVA graduate composition students invite guest performers to participate in a residency that culminates in a concert featuring works written specifically for that performer.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA’s historic Lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. Parking is available in the C1 lot off McCormick Road and at the Central Grounds Parking Garage on Emmet Street, both within walking distance of the hall. Handicap parking is available in the small lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
