The University of Virginia Department of Music presents the UVA Jazz Chamber Groups in concert on Sunday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of acclaimed UVA jazz faculty Pete Spaar, Mike Rosensky, Calvin Brown, and Sharel Cassity, the UVA Jazz Chamber Groups bring together student musicians in a variety of small ensembles, from intimate quartets to dynamic octets. Open to performers from beginner-intermediate through advanced levels, the program offers students the opportunity to develop their musicianship through collaboration, improvisation, and live performance.
Drawing on the rich traditions of jazz while embracing contemporary influences, the Jazz Chamber Groups explore a wide range of repertoire—from works by legendary artists such as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, and Antonio Carlos Jobim to music by today's leading jazz composers, as well as original compositions and arrangements by UVA faculty and students. Each ensemble brings its own distinctive voice, resulting in performances that are fresh, engaging, and uniquely expressive.
Throughout the academic year, the Jazz Chamber Groups perform in Old Cabell Hall, collaborate with guest artists, and present outreach performances across the Charlottesville community. Their season culminates in the annual Jazz on the Lawn, a celebration of jazz, creativity, and community on the University of Virginia's historic Grounds.
Old Cabell Hall is located at the south end of the University of Virginia's Historic Lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. Please visit the Department of Music's Directions and Parking page for parking information.
