Music Library poster for Music Department history lectureCome stroll through eighty years of Music department History!

We’re celebrating the completion of a new archival project to preserve nearly a century of records—from .wav files to tape reels, DAT tapes to VHS cassettes. These performances are the results of decades of study from thousands of students, faculty, and guests, both in groups like the University of Virginia Glee Club and the Free Bridge Quintet as well as in solo recitals. We’ve preserved Afropop festivals and early music concerts, opera workshops and experimental digital ensembles. With a history that goes back as far as the 1940s, this collection represents eras of the University’s development.

On April 26, we celebrate the conclusion of this project and invite you to join us at the Harrison-Small auditorium for free food and drinks as well as remarks by Judith Shatin and live music from the Glee Club. Attendees will be able to have digitized recordings delivered to them in the Special Collections Reading room. Come experience a fascinating selection of the collection and explore the rich musical history of UVA!Wednesday, April 26, 2023
