"The Ceiling Floats Away"
“The Ceiling Floats Away” album release performance and forum on emergent democracies and creativity will take place on March 29 at The Haven, 112 Market St in Charlottesville. The event will begin at 6pm with a live performance of “The Ceiling Floats Away,” created by Matthew Burtner and Rita Dove who will perform with the EcoSono Ensemble and Interactive Media Research Group (IMRG). This event is presented by the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF) as part of the "Imagining Change Through Connections and Creativity” series. “The Ceiling Floats Away” album production was supported by the University of Virginia's Institute for the Humanities and Global Cultures (IHGC), and the work was created with support from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The album is published by Ravello Records, a label of Parma Recordings and distributed by Naxos.
"The Ceiling Floats Away” is a groundbreaking new collaboration, bridging the gap between different spaces: spoken word and song, performance and technology, audience and artist. Commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts, "The Ceiling Floats Away” was awarded a Special Jury Award in the 2016 American Prize in Chamber Music Composition for "Unique Nexus of Acoustics, Electronics and Audience Interaction." Since its composition, it has been selected for performance at various festivals and venues, including the Smithsonian Natural History Museum’s Accelerate Innovation Festival. "The piece features musical setting of poems, accompanied by a mobile phone app called Nomads that enables listener interaction with the work. As Burtner writes, “The piece empowers people as creative agents in an artwork without walls, without ceiling.” As Dove writes, "In this piece, poetry turns into music, while music melts into utterance and communal murmurings.”
