Oratorio Society of Virginia: Mendelssohn’s Elijah
The Oratorio Society of Virginia will present Mendelssohn’s Elijah on May 10 at 3:30 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall, an inspiring work brought to life with the help of some of today’s most compelling vocal artists. This performance features tenor Brenden Christie as soloist, alongside bass-baritone Richard Ollarsaba and mezzosoprano Isabel Randall, joined by a full orchestra and 105-voice chorus for an unforgettable performance of this masterwork from the oratorio repertoire.
We’re pleased to share a recent interview with rising tenor Brenden Christie, who reflects on his remarkable journey from accounting to vocal performance, the mentors who helped shape his path, and his excitement for this important moment in a season already filled with extraordinary opportunities. Christie had initially pursued accounting at the University of Lynchburg before realizing his passion lay in music. Encouraged by his voice teacher, Mark Owen Davis, he auditioned for The Pirates of Penzance and discovered a deep love for performance. With continued mentorship and intensive training, Christie has rapidly developed as an artist, recently singing in a masterclass for Metropolitan Opera tenor Aaron Blake and earning acceptance to the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, where he will begin studies in fall 2026.
Reflecting on his journey, Christie emphasizes the transformative power of pursuing one’s passion, sharing that “It’s possible—you can pivot. You don’t have to be stuck.” His story highlights both the discipline and inspiration behind his artistry, as well as the support of mentors who recognized his potential and helped guide his path.
