To reimagine is to revisit, rediscover, or reflect on an original event, work of art, or concept. We can revisit a memory to enjoy refocusing on certain details. We can rediscover a book and find plot twists we first missed. We can reflect on nearly anything original, and a response may follow which becomes our reimagination of the artist’s original impulse.

On Monday, November 22, the University of Virginia Wind Ensemble will reimagine the concert experience and finding renewed inspiration to create and engage as a community. This free event is open for anyone in the community to attend. The Wind Ensemble will be joined by writers from the UVA community who will offer their own reflections and creation based on the music performed. All of the musical pieces being performed are themselves reimaginations of original works or are representative of something original, and include Steve Danyew’s Variations on the Tallis Canon, Percy Grainger’s Molly on the Shore, Thomas Albert’s A Maze with Grace, Giovanni Santos’s Aphelion, Roger Zare’s Mare Tranquilitatus, Sohei Kano’s Wave Color, and Satoshi Yagisawa’s Capricious Winds II.

The current pandemic has driven artists to look for new ways to collaborate while reaching deeper into their communities. During Re:Imagine, musicians and writers will share their art, and young community members are encouraged to paint, draw, or sculpt with materials graciously provided by IX Park. Afterward, you’re encouraged to meet the musicians and writers! Re:Imagine is about bringing art into the community and celebrating being together. We hope you’ll join us!

All events are subject to change.
