Biography

Nomi Dave researches music and aesthetic practices in authoritarian and post-authoritarian regimes. Her work focuses on the Republic of Guinea, and the role of music, voice, emotion and violence in public life. She is currently completing a book, The Revolution’s Echoes: Music, Politics, and Pleasure in Guinea, with the support of a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The book examines the legacies of authoritarianism, and the meanings and pleasures that authoritarian aesthetics hold for Guinean citizens.

Nomi earned her PhD from Oxford University (2012), where she studied music and social anthropology. She has also taught at Duke University, where she was a Visiting Assistant Professor in Music and Cultural Anthropology. Prior to becoming an ethnomusicologist, she trained as a lawyer and worked in the fields of human rights, immigration, and humanitarian law, in West Africa and the US.
