Schoenberg’s mighty “Ode to Napoleon”, composed during WWII as a protest against tyranny by setting to music poet Lord Byron’s ironic 1814 “Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte”. There is Richard Strauss’s powerful Metamorphosen, written in 1945 as an elegy to the devastation of Munich and its famous opera house, where his father had been the principal horn.
