The following summarizes the program requirements as they would occur in a typical course of study. Students and their Mentors/Advisors should consult this outline each semester to ensure all requirements are being met.

Year 1

*Recommended deadline. Language exam must be completed by the end of  Fall semester in Year 3.
Computer languages must receive approval of advisor before exam is taken and credit is received.

Year 3

Draft of dissertation prospectus (due to advisor by March 15, to composition faculty by April 1)
Completion of Ph.D. Qualifying Exams by April 1
Submission of prospectus to Graduate Committee (due to DGS by the end of the Spring semester)
Admission to Ph.D. candidacy (Spring semester)
Select Ph.D. committee, committee chair

Year 4 through Year 6

Non-Topical Research (12 credits, MUSI 9998)
   **divided into three courses, each 4 credits, one per faculty advisor

Dissertation Procedure

Visit the GSAS Dissertation Submission website for more details and appropriate forms

File for Ph.D. Degree9/30 for a December degree, 1/31 for a May degree, 6/30 for an August degree
File title page of Dissertation11/1 for a December degree, 4/1 for a May Degree, 7/1 for an August degree
Submission of Dissertation for DefenseDue to Ph.D. committee at least 30 days before the defense
Dissertation DefenseShould take place at least two weeks before deadline for Submission of Dissertation to the Graduate Enrolled Office
Submission of two copies of complete Dissertation to the Graduate Enrolled Student Office12/1 for a December degree, 5/1 for a May degree, 8/1 for an August degree
