The Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra continues its 2010-11 Feast of Sound season with a program titled “Indulge” on Saturday, March 26, 8:00 p.m., at Old Cabell Hall on the U.Va Grounds, and Sunday, March 27, 3:30 p.m., at Monticello High School in Charlottesville.

Conducted by Music Director Kate Tamarkin, the concert includes Gerald Finzi’s Romance, five of Gustav Mahler’s intimate and autobiographical Rückert-Lieder and Gustav Holst’s gargantuan The Planets.

Featured as the guest artist in the Mahler songs is mezzo-soprano Laura Zuiderveen.

Ms. Zuiderveen was the alto soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Vespers with the Choral Arts Society of Washington last year.  She also sang Prokofiev’s The Field of the Dead from Alexander Nevsky with Choral Arts in 2007.  Recent engagements include the critically acclaimed roles of Aunt Cecilia March in Adamo’s Little Women, Madame de la Haltière in Massenet’s Cendrillon, La Zia Principessa in Puccini’s Suor Angelica - all with Summer Opera Theatre - and Katisha in The Mikado with the Washington Savoyards.

Ms. Zuiderveen received first prize in the Wagner division of the Liederkranz Foundation annual vocal competition.  She has been described as “rich-voiced and moving” by The Washington Post.

The women of the U.Va University Singers will join the orchestra in “Neptune,” the final movement of The Planets.  Michael Slon is the conductor of the University Singers.

For those who want to “get behind the scenes,” pre-concert lectures will be presented 45 minutes before each concert.  Free of charge, these informative and entertaining lectures by McIntire Department of Music Chairman and Associate Professor of Music Richard Will offer both novice and experienced patrons a deeper appreciation of the performances.  Saturday’s lecture will take place in Minor Hall; Sunday’s lecture will be held in the Forum at Monticello High School.

Prior to the March 27th performance at the high school, the orchestra will host a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.  Miniature Mozarts and budding Beethovens will be able to explore, touch and learn to make sounds on instruments they may play in school band or orchestra.

Instruments are being provided by Music For HOPE whose mission is to purchase new instruments and refurbish donated used instruments for distribution to children in low-income families and under-funded school music programs.  More information is available at www.musicforhope.org.

There is no admission charge for the Petting Zoo.  To register, call (434) 924-3139.

Free parking is available in the U.Va Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet   Street, on Saturday night and at the high school on Sunday afternoons.  Both venues are wheelchair accessible.

Concert tickets are priced at $35, $30, $25 and $20 for adults, and $10 for students.  U.Va students may request one complimentary ticket in advance.  Tickets may be purchased at The University of Virginia Arts Box Office, (434) 924-3376, 12:00-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday in the lobby of the Drama Building at 109 Culbreth Road, or on-line at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.
