The UVA Department of Music has returned to a full performance schedule for the first time since the pandemic, offering more than 40 events this fall. Music lovers can choose from an array of concerts and events ranging from Tea Time Recitals that showcase the work of student musicians to the UVA Chamber Music Series, the highly acclaimed Free Bridge Jazz Quintet, colloquia focused on using immersive environments (i.e. virtual reality) for music-making and so much more.

Here are just a few highlights:

TechnoSonics Festival – Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14.  The busy fall kicks off on October 13 with the launch of the annual two-day TechnoSonics Festival presented by the University’s Composition and Computer Technologies (CCT) program. The festival, which highlights new electronic music, intermedia, and sound art, will feature guest artists Mariah Chavez (experimental turntablist and sound artist) and Jordi Wheeler, a multi-instrumentalist and improviser. Chavez and Wheeler create music installations that combine electronic sound, video, interactive light, newly invented homemade instruments and more. They will perform a collaborative composition on October 13 and offer an all-ages workshop in turntablism and improvisation on at Visible Records on October 14. The festival will also feature new works by faculty, staff, and graduates of the CCT program. All TechnoSonics Festival events are free and open to the public.

UVA Bands Fall Showcase Concert – Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Cavalier Marching Band – Saturday, October 14, 7PM – Paramount Theater The Cavalier Marching Band will be joined by the UVA Wind Ensemble and an impressive array of guest soloists as they to celebrate their 20th Anniversary with a special concert at the Paramount Theater. The two ensembles will be joined by guest soloists Kelly Sulick, flute; Max McNutt, trumpet; Robert Jospé, Latin Percussion; and John D’earth on trumpet; as well as Danielle King, soprano. Jamar Hicks will serve as the emcee for an evening of music that will include Kirkpatrick Fanfare by Andrew Boysen Jr., Meditation from Thaïs by Jules Massenet, Waltzes from El Capitan by John Philip Sousa, La Virgen de la Macarena by Monterde, The Orange and Blue March by Alexander Spotswood Campbell II, and many fan favorites performed by the Cavalier Marching Band. UVA Flute Forum Recital featuring Valerie Coleman – Saturday, October 21 – Forum 9am-5pm; Recital 3:30pm – Old Cabell Hall The eighth annual UVA Flute Forum on Saturday, October 21will welcome Grammy-nominated flutist and composer Valerie Coleman, one of the most sought-after artists in all classical music, along with five additional guest artists. Coleman’s stunning compositions and dynamic performances have earned her Performance Today’s 2020 Classical Woman of the Year honors as well as a place on the Washington Post’s list of Top 35 Women Composers. The Charlottesville Symphony continues its 2023-2024 season with Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto on Saturday November 11th at 7:30pm in Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, November 12th at 3:30pm at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center.

Nicknamed “Emperor,” Beethoven’s last piano concerto is bursting with bold themes and fiery cadenzas, as well as one of his most emotive slow movements. The symphony will be joined by pianist Dr. Arunesh Nadgir, the Coordinator for Keyboard Studies at Middle Tennessee State University and an acclaimed soloist and chamber musician in the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia. The UVA University Singers, conducted by Michael Slon, will join the orchestra for the second half of the program, performing works including Equus by Eric Whitacre; Jennifer Higdon’s O magnum mysterium;, a clever setting of the traditional text in both Latin and English; and a cantata for tenor and chamber orchestra based on psalm texts, I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes, by Adolphus Hailstork.
