Eli Chen

Eli Chen, a fourth year Biochemistry B.S. and Music B.A. student at the University of Virginia, will present a violin and conducting recital as part of the McIntire Department of Music’s Distinguished Majors Program on Saturday, April 9th, at 8:00 pm in Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. The program, featuring works by Mozart, Bach, Vaughan Williams, and Ravel, will explore the different forms that a musical idea or theme may take. This recital is presented as the culmination of Mr. Chen's years of study under David Sariti and Kate Tamarkin and will also feature other students in the Department as well as other members of the musical community in and around Charlottesville.

During his studies at the University, Mr. Chen has performed extensively with the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra as well as other student groups in the area. He also had the privilege last year to serve as Music Director for Opera Viva's production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and played that summer in the Ash Lawn Opera Festival's productions of "Don Giovanni" and "Brigadoon." Mr. Chen has played in masterclasses for such notables as Ed Klorman, Charles Castleman, and Todd Phillips, and participated for a time in the Conductors Institute at Bard given by Harold Farberman. After graduation, Mr. Chen intends to further his studies in violin and conducting and pursue his passion and vision for music.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.
