The Free Bridge Quintet welcomes dynamic jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel to share the stage with them for their February 27th concert in Old Cabell Hall auditorium at 8:00pm. “Kurt Rosenwinkel is rightfully most celebrated for being a 21-century innovator of new music,” begins the liner notes by Ethan Iverson for Rosenwinkel’s latest album (his eighth as leader) titled, Standards Trio: Reflections. “This album of standards offers a clear view of Kurt as a jazz guru.”
A Philadelphia native, Kurt is one of the most sought-after young jazz guitarists on the scene today. He earned his initial reputation as a sideman with such jazz greats as Joe Henderson, Paul Motian and Gary Burton but over the last decade he has established himself as a strong leader in his own right with such recordings as 2001's "The Next Step", 2005's "Deep Song" and 2008's "The Remedy: Live at the Village Vanguard". Kurt's playing is firmly rooted in the jazz tradition even as it pushes the boundaries of jazz style. As John Kelman of "All About Jazz" puts it:
Of the new wave of players that has emerged in the past decade...the one most seen to be representing the future of jazz guitar is Kurt Rosenwinkel—a player who is rightfully taking his place alongside other significant contemporary figures like Pat Metheny, John Scofield, John Abercrombie and Bill Frisell.
The concert will feature a mixture of jazz standards as well as original music by both Kurt and the Quintet. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $8 for students, and free for UVA students if they are reserved in advance. Tickets can be purchased at the Arts Box Office (www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu) or by calling 434.924.3376.
