Mark Williams

Mark Williams, fourth year tenor, presents a recital program of English art songs, German lieder, Italian opera, and American musical theater, including selections from Schubert, Vaughan Williams, Donizetti, and Sondheim, among many others. With themes of longing, desire, fear, love, and contemplation, the evening will be an exploration of emotional expression through time and place. David Norfrey and Michael Slon accompany the program.

The recital takes place on Sunday, March 28th at 8 pm in the Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. Admission is free for everyone, with a reception in the lobby at the conclusion of the program.

Mark Williams comes from a classical piano background, growing up in Durham, North Carolina. He has studied voice with tenor James Taylor for three years in his time at UVa, where he majors in both Music and American Studies. In college, he developed interest in opera and classical performance but also continues to enjoy musical theater performance as w ell. Future plans include pursuing further training in classical voice at the graduate level.

Pianist David Norfrey holds a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory, and a Master’s degree in Sacred Music/Organ from Westminster Choir College. At the University of Virginia he serves as accompanist for the University Singers and Chamber Singers, and as a pianist for various vocal and instrumental studios. Mr. Norfrey has also enjoyed collaborative work as a pianist/organist at James Madison University and other schools and churches in the Charlottesville area. He worked as Minister of Music at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville from 2006-2008, and is currently Interim Handbell Director at First Presbyterian Church.

Currently the Director of the University Singers and UVa Chamber Singers and a member of the music faculty at UVa, Michael Slon is most often found conducting choral, orchestral or theatre repertoire, and (more occasionally) writing.  He has conducted choruses and orchestras at the Oberlin Conservatory, Indiana University School of Music, and Cornell University, and prepared choruses for concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.  As a pianist and continuo player, he has played for works ranging from the Bach Mass in B minor to shows by Sondheim, Schwartz, and Schmidt, and has accompanied singers in recital since undergrad days, when it proved a useful (and enjoyable) way to help pay for college.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.
